Molecular Ecology and Evolution

The evolutionary ecology of an allopolyploid neospecies, Salsola ryanii.

Salsola ryanii is a newly formed species derived via hybridization between S. tragus, one of the World's Worst Weeds, and S. australis, both of which are invasive species in the North America. This neospecies has evolved within the last 100 years within the Central Valley of California and was originally described from a very small number of populations. We conducted a systematic survey of Salsola in California to determine how the range of this species has changed through time. We document a rapid range expansion in this species over a ten-year period, which includes expansion outside of California's Central Valley, where the species originally evolved. We will also present data on the population genetics and chromosomal make-up of this newly formed species.
