Biogeography of Neotropical orchids: the origin of Cymbidieae.

Recent advances in the understanding of phylogenetic relationships of Neotropical orchids are allowing new evolutionary questions of biogeographic history to be addressed.  Where were plants in the distant past compared to now?  How has the geologic history influenced such evolutionary patterns with regard to plant movement?  We know that some major clades of orchids are completely restricted to the New World, yet we do not know the geographic origin of those groups.  By using time-calibrated phylogenetic data and reconstructing geographic character states, we test for patterns of distribution and the putative geographical origin among broadly related Neotropical orchids of tribe Cymbidieae.
