Pteridological Section/AFS Rhodes, Zachary [1], Hooper, Elisabeth A. [2], Yatskievych, George [3]. Description of a New African Fern Species Belonging to Triplophyllum (Tectariaceae). A fern specimen collected in 2008 in Gabon, Africa, was suspected of being an undescribed species, most likely belonging to Triplophyllum (Tectariaceae), a genus of about 20 species in Africa, Madagascar and the Neotropics. To confirm this generic designation, a morphological study was conducted to compare the new specimen to known Triplophyllum species and to several members of Tectaria and Ctenitis. A total of 110 leaf and rhizome characters were analyzed. In addition, spore morphology (size and surface ornamentation) was examined using light and scanning electron microscopy. These data support the placement of this new species in Triplophyllum and it is unique within Africa in its smaller size, less dissected fronds, and longer ctenitoid hairs. The new species will be named T. parvum in reference to its small size. Log in to add this item to your schedule
